Former MOD Building, H Block

Asbestos removal, environmental clean, soft strip and demolition to slab level. Works to include ground clearance and tree protection.

H Block was a former MOD accomodationbuilding which was redundant and subject to regular unlawful entry. The site is closely bordered by a housing estate to the south and trading estate to the North and East so communication and consultation with local residents and the business community was essential to the project delivery. The area surrounding the building was extremely overgrown at the start of the project. Asbestech undertook a ground clearance operation to a distance of three metres from the building perimiter, after isolation of all key services such as gas and electricity on the site. This ground clearance in turn enabled the construction of hard stand areas on top of a Geotextile protective covering. The site is also home to several trees which are subject to Tree Protection Orders, which were protected utilising an arrangement of fixed scaffold and Herris fencing.

H Block contained damaged asbestos pipe insulation throughout the building which was removed utilising the wetting through injection technique under fully controlled conditions.

After a full environmental clean, Asbestech then carried out a soft strip of the entire building ensuring that all recyclable materials were treated in line with the environmental assessment.

Throughout the demolition, a fine mist spray was applied to the site to reduce any airborne dust arising from the works and utilising 20t excavators equiped with pulversing attachments the building was progressively folded into its own footprint. Materials were crushed and seperated on site with all steel recycled and all crushed concrete used to create a new oversite.

The site also housed two bunkers which had the reinforced concrete ceilings removed and then backfilled.

Following post tender specification changes the entire project was completed within the councils programme and budget with a nil near miss/accident ratio.
