Queen Mary University London – G O Jones Physics Building

Asbestech was selected, after a long and extremely rigorous tender process, to undertake the asbestos removal works prior to the main refurbishment phase for the G O Jones Physics Building at Queen Mary University London on the Mile End Road in East London.

This CDM notifiable project saw us appointed as Principal Contractor, and had us build the complete site compound, scaffold and hoist within a heavily trafficked area in the bustling University. This entailed careful planning from our project team, with care taken to select suppliers that could work with us on delivery times as part of our risk reduction strategy. Other factors that had to be taken into account were the University’s Graduation Week, when deliveries had to be minimised, and Clearings Week when we were asked to avoid noisy works during certain hours.

The University has a defined programme within which to complete the works over five floors which contained asbestos in the form of sprayed insulation in the ceiling voids as well as in panels and floor tiles and various other locations, plus several large risers which reach from Lower Ground to Floor 6.

Asbestech planned the method and programme, the labour, the purchasing and the execution in great detail which meant that we were able to get the site established quickly, and the works are being carried out within the agreed programme.
