Asbestech awarded £250,000 Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Project

Asbestech Ltd have been awarded a prestigious £250,000 contract for a large asbestos removal project in Kensington Town Hall, London. The project was tendered in accordance with the Public Procurement Regulations, the Councils Contract Regulations, procurement policy and procedures and pitched Asbestech against a number of high profile competitors.

Six years ago a condition survey identified that the mechanical and electrical services at Kensington Town Hall would require major refurbishment works. This acted as a catalyst for the SPACE Programme which incorporates the total refurbishment of office areas. The condition survey report detailed that the electrical sub mains cables, which run from the bottom to the top of the building through five risers, have reached the end of their lives and could potentially fail.

Within the risers, and between each floor, an asbestos insulation board sheet has been used as a fire stop. This material must be removed to enable the replacement of the cables. Also, in certain areas, asbestos insulation board debris has been identified above the ceilings around the risers. This debris also has to be removed under fully controlled conditions.

The project has to be delivered with the minimum of disruption to the Borough’s operations and therefore most works are planned to take place over weekends with the entire project taking 12 weeks to complete.

Daniel Chalkley, Asbestech’s Managing Director said, “The Team are extremely pleased to have won this project in the face of such stiff competition. A lot of work went into the tender submission as the project is very technically demanding coupled with a lot of planning to minimise disruption to Borough staff. We are looking forward to working with the team at the Borough to successfully deliver this contract.”

The bid was scored by the Borough utilising a number of award criteria such as Capability, Compliance with Health & Safety, Quality Assurance, Sustainability, Value and Financial Standing, with Asbestech scoring the highest marks in each category.
